Skin

(inspired by Langston Hughes' "Theme for English B")

My skin-
the color of my hair
the shape of my eyes
boldly sing,
'i'm Asian'
but when I open my mouth
to speak
it's clear i'm American,
quite obviously Californian!
even when it's Chinese
i speak
it's evident i am ABC.
i am neither Asian, nor American.
i am both,
yet not.
Is it my skin
that determines who i am?
is it the country i was born in?
is it the languages i speak?
is it my accent or lack thereof?
My identity lies
within my soul-
something deeper than skin
and the country from whence i was born
i am a prism-colored mosaic
of yin-yang experiences
i am the dreamer of night and day
i am the late bloomer
of which is okay
i am the nightingale who sings
when the sun is asleep
because she is different
My skin
is but a shell to a turtle
it is not what makes me,
me

Professor Dickerson, my poetry professor, assigned us to write a poem based off of Langston Hughes' "Theme for English B" poem. This is what I came up with, I hope you'll like it. Please read Langston Hughes' poetry when you get the chance, the man was a brilliant poet!
